Shopping Tokyo

February 23, 2010

A couple weeks ago I took a trip to Tokyo to visit my best friend (A DISNEY PRINCESS!).  Little did I know I’d also be visiting the best-dressed city I have ever encountered.  Shopping and street style-watching there was incredible.  Some of the best spots I found were…

COMME ÇA ISM:

These are everywhere in Tokyo.  Like H & M or Gap, but chicer.  With a French flair.  The store captures the elegance that Japanese people embody everywhere (seriously, even when they’re just running errands on a bicycle) with classically gorgeous coats and boots and the like.

UNIQLO:

I’ve long been aware of the international brand available online and their wide array of inexpensive basics, but didn’t realize that the company has Japanese roots, and can be commonly found at Tokyo train station shopping centers.  Which makes sense.  The brand, with pieces like their thermal tech sweatshirts and down jackets, captures two quintessential elements of Japanese culture: efficiency and comfort.  Oh yeah, and style.  Got me some new UJ jeans and a pocket tee.

WONDER ROCKET:

This little shop on the legendary Takeshita Street in Harajuku evokes Alice in Wonderland with its whimsical Mori-girl/Lolita-girl style.  Florals and bows and knits abound.  Everything is super feminine and playful–even the Rabbit head displays.  Floaty hippy dresses and cheeky jewelry pieces were my favorite things to drool over.

Can’t wait to get back there!
